Survival Guide

You got this

01

Where there’s tea, there’s hope

When you feel that craving hit you, step away and make yourself a cup of tea or coffee. It distracts you from your choccy-dilemma, while also giving yourself a much deserved treat to get you through the day.

02

I just need a hug!

Need that comforting boost during your day? Swap those chocolate snacks for a cuddle with a loved one or a friend. Hugs can instantly increase oxytocin levels, which heals feelings of anger, loneliness and separation… all symptoms of chocolate withdrawal.

03

A breath of fresh air

Research has shown that chewing gum can distract you from your unhealthy cravings. It also gives your mouth that ‘just cleaned’ feel which prevents people from snacking afterwards. Mouth wash and toothpaste can also do the trick.

04

A moment on the lips, forever on the hips

Need some extra encouragement to get you through the day. Calculate the calories you can avoid by saying no to that cheeky chocolate snack! The average Australian eats 32kgs of chocolate a year – imagine that.

Did you know that there are 97 calories in just one Tim Tam?

05

Step away from the trolley

Research has shown that when you shop on an empty stomach, your battle against cravings are much harder to beat. By eating something healthy beforehand, your resistance levels are much higher and you’re more prepared to resist the temptation of chocolate.

06

Team up - All you need is love

Nominate a friend or co-worker to support you through your chocolate abstinence. This person will be there for you when you’re at your most vulnerable, reminding you of your reason behind taking on this challenge.

07

When all else fails, go for a run

Are you feeling tired and in need of a lift? Chocolate might sound tempting, however the effects will only be short-lived. Instead go for a 15 minute walk or run up and down the stairs. This will not only distract you from your cravings but will also energise you in a natural and healthy way.

08

Never underestimate the power of chocolate

Low magnesium levels can trick your brain into thinking you need chocolate badly. Chocolate is high in magnesium and going without this chemical can give you muscle cramps, restlessness and anxiety. You can easily fill this need by replacing chocolate with other alternatives that are high in magnesium such as almonds, cashews, brazil nuts and pecans.
